When you lose a pet, sometimes even our closest friends and family do not acknowledge or support the intensity of emotion that we feel. Even if they too have pets, they are not aware of the enormous impact that the death of our beloved friend has meant to you. It is at this stage it is more than likely feeling that you are feeling very much alone in your grief, you may even question it. Thinking how silly you must be to the outside world because it was " only a pet", however what people don't realize is that your pet was everything to you.......

Life and the world as you knew it, from this point on, has now been turned upside down and nothing makes sense anymore....

This is where acknowledgement and validation of our feelings and thoughts come into play. We need to feel like finally someone understands your plight and is not making it seem trivial or that you should feel stupid in how greatly you are experiencing your loss.

You may be one of the many people who experience loss of a companion animal and feeling guilty because you may have lost people in your life, that were very dear and close to you, but you may have not felt as much pain.

You may also find that your way of thinking and feeling may not be accepted by friends or family. They worry that you are seen as “seriously losing your way”.

Many ask - How could grief of a pet take over from the grief a person feels over a human?

It is so important to find a counselor that has walked this path, is compassionate and caring, respectful of your feelings and non-judgemental.
This is a very large step towards healing. By being able to share your pain more openly, this will assist you on the way to healing and put you on the path to recovery.

Paws for Reflection (PFR) was created to help people through one of the most difficult times of their lives, losing a pet.

PFR is one of the few Counseling services that specializes specifically in this area and also offers support for people who are carers of sick or infirmed pets (Anticipating Loss). At PFR your thoughts & feelings are taken seriously and I am here to empathize and support you.
