The APLB (Association for Pet Loss & Bereavement) website offers chat rooms and guidance. At a time when a bereaving pet owner can feel very much alone and is feeling very empty in the initial stage after losing their pet, by reading or being involved in others grief can sometimes help with starting the healing process. Knowing that you are not alone in this time of grief is so important and it can provide peace of mind knowing that all the confusion and questioning are completely normal and helps to put things back into some kind of perspective. Sharing others experiences sometimes gives us comfort. Memorialising your pet also makes it real and acknowledges the loss and thoughts of love expressed by their owners. It is a special place to go to, giving solitude and inner peace to grieving pet owners.
The Loss of a Pet written by Dr.Sife from the APLB is a book that gives an insight into thoughts and feeling after pet loss and a reference to turn to at a time when everything loses perspective. It acknowledges the pet owners love for their adored pet and the extreme pain and suffering that is felt when your beloved pet is no longer with you. It provides support and recognition of the feelings and emotions grieving pet owner’s experience, by its compassionate readings.
Bereavement Pet Counselors- one on one counseling preferably trained by the APLB, as they are specialists in this field.
Supportive Counseling Groups - referral to a recognised Pet Loss support group. Is an excellent way to share thoughts and feelings with others who have experienced Pet Loss. People who acknowledge the pet and owner relationship in a non-judge mental way and understand its infinite depth and profound impact on an owner’s life. Preference would be to a counselor that had been trained and are certified by the ALPB.
Emergency Hotlines- Salvation Army and Lifeline hotlines, these are non-profit organisations that do not exploit people at a time of need and are well respected. They have specialist grief counselors 24/7 offering after hours services.
