Without a doubt – the very worst part about having a pet – is having to say goodbye. Sometimes they’ll simply pass in their sleep but sometimes we can provide a final gift of asking our vet to put euthanase them to put them out of their pain.

It’s a tough call for all of us pet owners for sure – and one we’ve personally experienced 4 times – so far. We’ve currently got a very old dog and I’m starting to dread her inevitable passing.

And while all of this is extremely normal – most people don’t realise they can get help from a grief counsellor with extra training in helping pet parents deal with the loss of a ‘fur-child’.

One of the worst things about loving pets is the pain we feel when they leave us - regardless whether from old-age, sickness or an accident.

Karen Jaques, one of only a handful of qualified pet loss Grief Counsellors in Australia who has some wonderful, warm advice to get us through this inevitable ordeal.

PODCAST: Dealing With Grief

For some reason we pet owners seem to bond closer to our animals,  than say,  our family probably because we spend a lot more time with them for one thing!

They're often our shadows - so when they die, we grieve deeply, often more than after a human's passing.   So, over the last couple of weeks we’ve been learning what a grief counsellor does… and the various stages of grief.

Now, our special guest, grief counsellor Karen Jaques joins us again to suggest some of the ways to cope with grief.

PODCAST: The Stages of Grief

A few weeks back Karen Jaques – one of only a handful of registered grief counsellors in Australia explained what a grief counsellor actually does… This week Karen joins us again on VETtalk to help explain what actually are the stages of grief?
